Botox is a
neuromuscular toxin that blocks muscular nerve signals and preventing muscle
contraction. It treats "active" facial lines, meaning those that form
during facial expression. It is mainly used for the upper face such as the
forehead, the frown lines, the outer corner of the eye and the skin bands of
the neck. Botox cannot replace volume on the face. The effect takes about a
week to be realized and will then last 3-4 months after each treatment.
Fillers
(most commonly Hyaluronic Acid) are natural substances of the connective tissue
of the body and they can restore the volume beneath the skin’s surface. They
can treat firmly established wrinkles (static wrinkles) and areas that need
volume. They are mainly used on the lower face, such as around the mouth and
for lip enhancement. Although it can sometimes take a few days for the fillers
to settle and look their best, the fillers work immediately. HA injections are typically maintained for
eight to twelve months.
The best
way to know which treatment is best for you is to look at yourself in the
mirror and concentrate on your wrinkles. If you look at your forehead, or
around your eyes and you see wrinkles that become deeper and more pronounced
when you frown or squint your eyes this is best treated with botox. If you see
lines around the sides of your mouth, which become more noticeable when you
smile or laugh, or you think your lips need some volume that you will probably
need HA.
